Will ETS Bulk Up on Doctrinal Basis? ::: ETS Doctrinal Amendment Proposal
The ETS annual meeting starts tomorrow. If you don’t know by now that the ETS doctrinal statement may undergo revision at this years meeting, you should go to the ETS Amendment website, which is specifically designed to promote the amendment and clarify its purpose to help garner such support. The website tells about how Dr. Ray Van Neste and Denny Burk proposed the amendment in 2007, links you to an article written for its support in a journal, offers the amendment itself with a little explanation, responses to critics, supporters, a place to sign for support, and a blog. Clever way to garner support if you ask me.
The names of those who support the amendment that I recognized include Justin Taylor, Tom Ascol, Russel Fuller, Richard Gaffin, George W. Knight III, Eugene Merrill, Tom Schreiner, Steve Wellum. It appears that most of the supporters are Baptist (no surprise there).
Will the amendment pass? We will find out soon. What now proceeds is some words from one of the co-sponsers of the amendment, and the doctrinal amendment itself.
In 2001, the Society deliberated about what might be the appropriate doctrinal “boundaries” for the ETS. Many papers were presented on this theme, some of which were subsequently published in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (45.1 and 45:2). In light of the open theism controversy, it was a timely conversation. But the Society took no action or had any serious discussions to bolster its evangelical identity by revisiting its doctrinal basis. In short, nothing changed.
So Ray and I are trying to get this issue back on the agenda again for serious discussion. That is going to happen at this meeting.

ARTICLE III. DOCTRINAL BASIS
1. The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs. This written word of God consists of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments and is the supreme authority in all matters of belief and behavior.
2. God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory.
3. God is sovereign in creation, revelation, redemption and final judgment.
4. Since the fall, the whole of humankind is sinful and guilty, so that everyone is subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.
5. The Lord Jesus Christ, God’s incarnate Son, is fully God; he was born of a virgin; his humanity is real and sinless; he died on the cross, was raised bodily from death and is now reigning over heaven and earth.
6. Sinful human beings are redeemed from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only through the sacrificial death once and for all time of their representative and substitute, Jesus Christ, the only mediator between them and God.
7. Those who believe in Christ are pardoned all their sins and accepted in God’s sight only because of the righteousness of Christ credited to them; this justification is God’s act of undeserved mercy, received solely by trust in him and not by their own efforts.
8. The Holy Spirit alone makes the work of Christ effective to individual sinners, enabling them to turn to God from their sin and to trust in Jesus Christ.
9. The Holy Spirit lives in all those he has regenerated. He makes them increasingly Christ-like in character and behavior and gives them power for their witness in the world.
10. The one holy universal church is the Body of Christ, to which all true believers belong.
11. The Lord Jesus Christ will return in person, to judge everyone, to execute God’s just condemnation on those who have not repented and to receive the redeemed to eternal glory.

Gay Activists Invading Churches ::: Your Church Could Be Next
A Radical Gay activist group called Bash Back terrorized Mount Hope Church in Lansing, Michigan. Could you imagine? Why can’t same sex people accept diversity of opinion in a land of free speech? Good grief. Read about it here.
And You Thought Evangelical Catholic was an Oxymoron? • Francis J. Beckwith’s New Book
Francis J. Beckwith came out with a new book this month entitled Return to Rome: Confessions of an Evangelical Catholic. And I just found out that he has a website and also blogs! He was surprised to see that someone had written a review of his book so fast by none other than Southern’s very own Michael Haykin.
For those of you who don’t know, Beckwith used to not only be an evangelical Protestant, but he crossed over to Catholicism while holding the post as President of the Evangelical Theological Society. He’s no pushover. You know all those arguments we Protestants use to keep people convinced that Rome is not the place to go? Believe it or not … He’s heard all of them (and used many of them probably at some point in his life). He became skeptical about many of them and eventually, of course, convinced they were mislead.
This is a reality Protestant evangelicals need to stare in the face: Intelligent, biblically sophisticated, well-informed, theologically sober evangelicals can find very attractive aspects in Roman Catholicism—even in RC theology. And yes … there is such a thing as Evangelical Catholics, whether you like it or not. It’s not an oxymoron. Click here for a definition of Evangelical Catholic.

Contraception a Culprit to Denigration? :: Pope Paul VI’s Prophetic Warning
Sharon Hodde at She Worships claims that Pope Paul VI was a prophetic voice forty years ago in Humanae Vitae, and laments that we did not listen to him. She’s not sure if the growing use of contraception is the causal mechanism to the objectification of women, but she thinks it is at least one small contributing factor. Read her thoughts.
John 3:16 Conference :: Chris’ Copyright Crossexamination
Not long ago Todd reported indignantly that he had been unjustly accused of copyright infringement for posting John 3:16 Conference messages. He complained that someone had gone to the authorities without confronting him personally (like Christians are supposed to do). Now Chris shares his side of the story, and claims the recording of the messages was legal, but distributing them to others was illegal, and that he did in fact contact Todd personally. Here are some excerpts from his comments:
I am the one who posted on Todd’s site that the audio recording being posted on his site was illegal, You have been misinformed if you believe that it is legal. No notice has to be given. The speakers are the legal owners of the material and they granted Jerry Vines Ministries the right to record and reproduce the material. It does not matter that the recordings were made by an individual. He has the right to record the material (unless notice is provided), but he does not have permission to distribute unless he has permission from the copyright owner.
I am not the one that contacted the blog host and reported the activity. I did what was biblical and went to my brother in Christ and confronted him of his sin. He removed the material and in my mind the issue is/was settled.
I would wonder why you would accuse Jerry Vines Ministry of having no integrity. What have they done…. Todd is the one that violated the law. And while he is the one that broke the law he has no been accused of having no integrity.
… I too am shocked by how Jerry Vines Ministries is being attacked when they have done nothing wrong and the way they are being treated despite the fact that they are the ones that broke the law. Why is no one condemning the actions of Todd? Todd is relying on the ignorance of his “tech guy” and he is getting wrong advice.
Chris
Chris … Glad you get your side of the story. Maybe the Proverbs 18:17 principles applies here. “The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.”
If Chris is right, all those who recorded the John 3:16 conference and posted them or sent them to a bunch of friends may have broken the law (even if by ignorance).
