    Bradley, I’m a music pastor at a small church in Illinois. In 2008 I had a complete nervous breakdown and was catatonic for 4 weeks. Because of this, I developed major depressive disorder. Even though I had been in ministry for 15 years, I had never visited anyone in the hospital with mental illness. I had never heard a testimony in church on mental illness. I also never heard any prayer voiced in church for someone with mental illness ever or any sermon, bible study or devotional on anything related to mental illness. So, needless to say I did not know what was happening to me. Eventually, I did go to a secular therapist and psychiatrist because what limited help I was getting from religious professionals was not working. Eventually, I was pointed to a really good Christian counselor and that helped. That was 10 years ago. Over this last decade I have seen the devastating ramifications of the so-called “nuethetic/biblical counseling”. I have been asked by a worship team member what sin I had failed to confess. He said that if I just confessed to him and humble myself before the Lord, the depression would lift. After a while people stopped coming to visit me in my hopelessness and despair because they too did not know what scriptures to read to help me. Now ten years later and over the past 6 months, my wife and I started a mental health small group. These wonderful people are the most Godly saints I know. Some are still in the “darkness” and wonder where God is. It is really a blessing to share our stories of the reality and truth of mental illness. Thanks for sharing your critique of Jay Adams. For the past 49 years, his own personal opinions have corrupted so many Pastors and churches. I really appreciate your balanced view of how scripture actually portrays all the different ways in which honest truth mixed with compassion move throughout the lives of biblical characters.
